What You Need to Know About Rose Planting
A common mistake made by people planting rose bushes is simply digging a hole large enough to set the plant
inside, but for beautiful and strong blooms from a rose bush, you need to start with planning. For one thing,
rose planting needs to be in a location where the plants would get about seven hours of filtered sun every
day, as well as five or six hours of direct sunlight. While most species of rose bushes can tolerate some shade,
they need sun for proper growth. Therefore, wait to dig until you know where the best placement for the plant.
Another important consideration before putting the rose bush in the ground is the soil, which needs to be
properly prepared. The reason that some roses do so well is due to being planted in rich, nutritious soil. If the
soil has too much sand or clay, the plant would create serious problems. The easiest way to determine this is by
creation a clump of soil in the palm of your hand. If the ball of soil maintains a ball without crumbling, then it
has too much clay but if the soil crumbles, it contains too much sand. In addition, you should use a kit to make
sure your soil is not too high in limestone, chalk, or acid.
Another important consideration for rose planting is that the bushes need space so you want to make sure they
are not planted too close to other bushes, plants, shrubs, or trees. The reason for this is that your rose bushes
are going to need to extract water and nutrients from the soil. Therefore, if other plants were located too close,
they would be in competition. As you begin to dig the hole, you should not hit roots from trees and other plants
and if you do, then you need to choose a different location for rose planting.
After considering all your options and finally choosing the ideal location for your plant growing make sure the
hole you dig is a little bit larger than the size of the pot in which the rose bush is in so roots have room to
expand. One note on this, if you live in a colder region of the country, we suggest you make the hole a little
deeper so roots can survive. If you are unsure, you can always talk to a professional at your local gardening
center or nursery.
For the ultimate rose bush, one that blooms beautiful and fragrant flowers, place some compost on the bottom of
the hole and then plant the bush on top. In fact, putting about one-quarter cup of bone meal on top of the compost
would be even better. Once you have the rose bush out of its container, gently spread the roots apart and place the
bush in the prepared hole.
For watering, a great solution is to fill the hole with soil once the rose bush in, leaving a space about two to
three inches from the top. Then, water the rose bush, followed by filling the hole with the remaining soil to the
top. That way, you get the roots of the plant watered to give the bush a good start. With the hole filled, gently
tap the soil down and enjoy watching your plant grow healthy and strong.
