Vital Information for Proper Rose Care

One of the most beautiful, sweet smelling and versatile flowers is the rose. The rose bush has been grown for thousands of years throughout the world and is a flower with the symbolism of love and friendship. Unfortunately, many people believe that rose care is complicated and time-consuming, but in truth, with a little knowledge, anyone can grow magnificent flowers.

Another fact about roses is that there is a wide variety of species, so no matter what your personal preference is you will find rose bushes that produce different color flowers, shapes, heights, and so on. For starters, to make rose care easier, you want to begin by planting in a location where the plant will get six to seven hours of filtered sunlight and about five hours of shaded sunlight. Along with the right location, proper rose care includes healthy soil, and for the best blooming flowers, compost is the key to success.

Now, while ongoing rose care is not difficult, this particular type of bush does attract various insects, most commonly Japanese beetles, stem girders, aphids, rose cane borers, rose slugs, rose midge larva, scale insects, caterpillars, and finally, rose chafers. Obviously, insects cause significant damage to the plant’s leaves and flowers so you need to research each of these insects so you would be able to identify them quickly.

If the rose bush only has a few insects in sight, then you could simply pull them off by hand but if you have more, then it would be important to use an organic pesticide. As the pesticide is sprayed on, it is important to get every part of the plant, even under the leaves where insects tend to lay eggs.

While some people use non-organic herbicides and pesticides, we strongly recommend you stick with natural or organic products. Chemicals are not only too strong for the plants they also kill healthy microorganisms in the soil that rose bushes need. In addition, synthetic chemicals are dangerous to humans and pets.

Therefore, using organic products will get the job done but without posing a risk. In fact, some insects that like roses such as wasps and ladybugs are good in that they keep damaging insects away. To find the best organic products, you can research the internet or check with your local gardening center.

To ensure you get large, healthy, colorful, and fragrant blooms, another aspect of proper rose care is called “deadheading”. What this means is that as blooms die, they need to be cut off, which encourages new growth. If this type of pruning is not done, you will have only one bloom to enjoy. You also want to make sure you prune any dead or damaged leaves and stems.

The truth is that rose care simply involves a little bit of TLC. Adding one or several rose plants to your garden will enhance the entire appearance of the home. If you care for the plants properly, you can easily have incredible blooms starting the first part of June and taking you all the way to the first frost. Whether choosing miniature roses, standard roses, or climbing rose bushes that climb 30 feet you will not be disappointed.
